Prof. Aviram (Avi) Nissan was born in the United States. He graduated the Biology Department and Hadassah School of Medicine at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Now he serves there as Associate Professor of Surgery.
Prof. Aviram Nissan completed his internship and a residency in the Department of Surgery at Hadassah-Mt. Scopus as well as a Residency in the Department of Surgery of Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, USA. He also served as a Research Fellow in the Colorectal Service of the Department of Surgery, at New York’s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in New York, NY.
Prof. Aviram Nissan also completed a Fellowship in Surgical Oncology in Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s Department of Surgery, USA.
Prof. Nissan is the Head of the Department of General and Oncology Surgery at Sheba Medical Center since 2015, also he is the Chairman of the Society for Oncological Surgery. In 2014-2013 he headed the Surgical Department at the Hadassah Ein Karem Hospital.
Professor Nissan is one of the best specialists in Oncological Surgery and for many years specializes in complex tumors of the digestive system. He is a leading Israeli specialist in HIPEC treatment of abdominal metastases (removal of metastases from the peritoneal cavity with the help of hot chemotherapy CRS / HIPEC), which is considered the most successful and innovative way to treat abdominal malignant tumors.
Prof. Nissan also has vast experience in the surgical treatment of colorectal cancer, stomach cancer and soft tissue tumors (sarcomas).
Professor Nissan is the director of the Laboratory of Surgical Oncology at Sheba Hospital, which is researching tumors of the digestive tract and peritoneal cavities. He published more than 150 articles in the scientific journals and monographies. Professor Nissan lectures and conducts demonstration operations in many countries all around the world.

- 2006, Faculty Prize for Original Research. Multimarker RT-PCR assay for the detection of minimal residual disease in sentinel lymph nodes of breast cancer patients.
- 2007, USMCI CBCP award for outstanding grand rounds presentation. Minimal residual disease in epithelial tumors.
