About Doctor

Dr. Roberto Spiegelmann was born in Montevideo, Uruguay; he completed his studies in Medicine and received his MD from Universidad de la Republica, Uruguay. In 1980 immigrated to Israel where he resides to this day.

Dr. Spiegelmann completed Residency in Neurosurgery at Chaim Sheba Medical Center.  He then served as Clinical Fellow in Functional Neurosurgery and Radiosurgery at the University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, working with William A Friedman and Frank Bova who at the time were just starting up their pioneering work in LINAC radiosurgery.

Upon his return to Israel,  Dr Spiegelman founded the first Radiosurgery facility in the Middle East, at Sheba Medical Center, which opened in December 1992.  This linear accelerator Radiosurgery Unit has since treated over 5000  patients. In the year 2000 this service was given a formal position of a Professional Unit within the Department of Neurosurgery, with Dr. Spiegelmann appointed as its Head.

Dr. Spiegelmann has been very active in spreading the knowledge about radiosurgery on a national and international level. He has pioneered in Israel  the combined approach of microsurgery and radiosurgery to facilitate and improve the management of difficult clinical  situations in patients with metastatic brain disease, acoustic neurinomas and meningiomas.

Dr Spiegelmann is a member of several international professional societies. He served for 10 years on the Board of Directors of the International Society for Stereotactic Radiosurgery (ISRS), and was President of this Society between 2007 and 2009.

Dr. Spiegelmann, a Senior Staff Neurosurgeon at the Department of Neurosurgery, Chaim Sheba Medical Center, has been very active in functional neurosurgery. This began in the early 1990s with lesional surgery for movement disorders,  continued in the last 15 years with Deep Brain Stimulation, and lately with the application of High Intensity Focus Ultrasound (HiFUS), a non-invasive technology, for the treatment of hand tremor and other movement disorders.

By being the first functional neurosurgeon in the country, Dr Spiegelmann introduced GPI pallidotomy, deep brain stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, intra-thecal baclofen therapy, and a host of stereotactic and open functional procedures to the therapeutic armamentarium in Israel.  Surgery for chronic pain conditions and surgery for movement disorders continue to be central to his professional activities.

Dr. Spiegelmann is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the World Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (WSSFN).
