Dr. Koji Izutsu is newly appointed as Head of Hematology Department of National Cancer Center Hospital (NCCH) in 2017, he has been in the field of hematological malignancies with firm academic interest in improving prognosis of lymphoid malignancies while maintaining better quality of life of the patients. For decades, he has been contributing to practice guidelines of Japanese Society of Hematology and the Japan Society for Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation. He has been a principal investigator for many corporate-sponsored clinical trials (phase 1, 2, 3 including global trials) for lymphoma, leukemia, and myeloma.
NCCH is a top referral center for hematological malignancies in Japan with six attending physicians/clinical researchers who possess rich experience in early to late stage clinical trials. His team also has actively contributed to all types of clinical trials including not only corporate-sponsored phase 1-3 local and global trials but also investigator-initiated multicenter trials. NCCH Hematology Department plays a key role in the development of many novel agents for hematologic malignancies in Japan.
Collaboration is another strong asset of Hematology Department. Collaborating with other departments at NCCH will support his best clinical practice; hematopathologists and laboratory specialists with expertise in diagnosis of hematological malignancies, and Department of Hematopoietic Stem Cell transplantation in cellular therapy. His recent interest is precision medicine in hematologic malignancies where more collaborative approach with basic researchers and the drug industry will be required.
