Dr. Kawai is an orthopaedic oncologist specializing in the treatment of patients with bone and soft tissue sarcomas. As an expert in sarcoma treatment, his work involves not only the surgical removal of tumors aimed at preservation of affected limbs, but also chemotherapy using cytotoxic drugs and molecular targeting agents. His clinical interest lies in the care of patients with sarcomas using the most advanced, evidence-based, patient-friendly treatment methods. In recent years, he has played an important role in the development of newly approved drugs for sarcomas in Japan. Dr. Kawai has published over 250 peer-reviewed articles on sarcoma treatment and basic research, and he plays many national and international roles. He serves as the director of the Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Registry in Japan and is a member of the Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Committee of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association. At present he serves as the secretary of the Connective Tissue Oncology Society.
The Department of Musculoskeletal Oncology and Rehabilitation Medicine focuses on the treatment of patients with bone and soft tissue sarcomas and those with bone metastases from various types of cancer. The Department consists of a multidisciplinary team of physician-scientists, therapists and patient support advocates who care for individuals with these diseases. The Department is one of the largest sarcoma centers in Japan and a leading institute for the development of new treatments for sarcomas, not only in the field of surgery but also drug development. To widen treatment options for sarcomas through an understanding of the basic mechanisms of the disease, and to identify therapeutic targets, the members collaborate closely with distinguished researchers working in the laboratories of the National Cancer Center Research Institute, including the Divisions of Cancer Genomics, Molecular and Cellular Medicine, Rare Cancer Research, and Department of Clinical Genomics.
